What is Yusof Gajah Illustration Award (YGIA)?
The YGIA is a national award in Malaysia established to encourage and recognise creativity, originality, and artistic excellence in picture book illustration
Who can participate?
The competition is open to illustrators who are Malaysian citizens or permanent residents.
Are there separate categories by age?
Yes, there are two categories:
- Teenagers (17 years and below).
- Adults (18 years and above).
Can children younger than 13 years old submit entries?
Children younger than 13 years old may also submit entries and will be considered under the same category, as there is no separate category for children.
What kind of works are eligible?
Only original, unpublished illustrations are accepted. Published works, or illustrations that have appeared in print, digital, or commercial form, are not eligible.
Can I submit Digital Illustration?
Digital illustrations are acceptable as long as they are your own original work. You may use any medium, traditional (such as watercolour, gouache, pencil, ink, collage) or digital techniques, or a combination of both.
However, AI-generated or AI-assisted images are not permitted. All entries must be created by the illustrator, demonstrating personal creativity and artistic skill.
How many illustrations must I submit?
Each participant must submit three illustrations forming a coherent theme with the potential to be developed into a picture book.
Can I submit a comic or graphic novel?
No. Submissions must be three standalone illustrations forming a coherent picture book. Comic strips or graphic novels are not eligible.
What format should I use?
- Digital format (JPEG or PNG)
- Resolution: 300 dpi
- Size: A3
- Both colour and black-and-white illustrations are accepted
Do I need to include anything besides the artwork?
Yes. Each submission must include:
- Content Statement (approx. 100 words): explaining the story concept and synopsis.
- Artistic Technique Statement (approx. 100 words): describing the medium, technique and creative process of illustration.
Can I use Artificial Intelligence (AI) in creating my artwork?
No. AI-generated artwork is not permitted.
Can I submit more than one entry?
Yes. Participants may submit multiple entries (one entry per book), with three selected illustrations per entry.
How will I know if my entry has been successfully submitted?
You will receive an email confirmation after clicking the “Submit” button. If you do not see it in your inbox, please check your spam folder.
Do I retain copyright over my work?
Yes. Copyright remains with the artist. However, by entering, you grant YGIA the non-exclusive right to use the submitted works for jury evaluation, exhibitions, award publications, catalogues, and promotional material. All uses will be credited to the artist.
How are winners selected?
All submitted entries will be reviewed and evaluated by a panel of jurors with expertise in children’s literature, illustration, and publishing. Their responsibility is to assess each submission for its quality, creativity, composition and originality, in line with the Award’s established criteria.
Can I change my submitted artwork?
No. Once submitted, entries cannot be altered.
Will my artwork be showcased on any platforms?
Yes. winning works will be featured on selected websites and at events.
Can I submit artwork created by another person under my name?
No. All submissions must be the participant’s own original work.
Can I participate in both categories?
No. Each participant may only enter one category.
What are the important dates?
Entries are open from 21 September 2025 to 3 November 2025.
Finalist announcement will be in December 2025
How will I know if I am a finalist?
If you are selected as a finalist, you will be notified directly by the Secretariat.
